Why Nungwi Is the Best-Kept Secret for a Private Villa Holiday

There’s a particular moment that guests at our Nungwi property describe again and again. They step outside their villa at around 6:30 in the morning, the beach is completely empty, the Indian Ocean is doing that thing where it looks almost impossibly turquoise, and they realise — nobody else is here. Just them, the sound of the water, and a breakfast table that’s been set up on the sand.

That moment is not accidental. It’s exactly what we’ve spent years building toward.

Having welcomed guests from over 40 countries to our private beach villas in Zanzibar, we’ve learnt a great deal about what separates a genuinely memorable holiday from one that just ticks boxes. This post shares that knowledge honestly — the things worth knowing before you book, the questions we hear most often, and why Nungwi specifically delivers something the south of the island simply can’t.

Nungwi: Why Location Changes Everything

Most people planning a Zanzibar trip land in Stone Town and think of heading south toward the famous beaches of Paje or Jambiani. These are beautiful, no question. But the north tip of the island — where Safaya is located — operates differently.

The tides at Nungwi are dramatically calmer than the south and east coast beaches. This matters more than most travel sites admit. On tidal beaches, you can walk outside at low tide and find yourself standing in shallow water that barely reaches your knees, 200 metres from where the ocean actually is. On the northwest coast, the water stays swimmable throughout the day. You don’t plan your morning around a tide chart.

Nungwi also sits closer to Mnemba Atoll, one of East Africa’s most celebrated dive sites. From our villa, a private boat trip to Mnemba Island takes around 45 minutes. We’ve taken guests who’ve never snorkelled before and watched them come back completely transformed by what they saw — sea turtles, dolphins on the crossing, coral formations that look like something from a nature documentary.

For sunset, there is no competition. Because Nungwi faces northwest, you get a full horizon sunset over the ocean. In the south, the sun sets over land.

What “Private Villa” Actually Means Here

The phrase gets used loosely in hospitality, so let us be specific about what it means at Safaya.

When you book one of our luxury villas in Zanzibar, you are not sharing a complex with 80 other guests. You are not walking past other couples to reach the pool. You have a dedicated space — your own entrance, your own terrace, your own slice of beach access — and a team who is focused on your stay specifically.

We have three villa options, each suited to slightly different preferences:

The Safaya Dream Villa – Sea View is the flagship. At 120 square feet of internal space, it’s the largest of the three, and the sea views from the bed itself are the kind you photograph but struggle to do justice. Guests who honeymooned here have come back for anniversaries, which tells you something.

The Luxury Villa – Sea View sits at a slightly more intimate scale and is genuinely one of the more beautiful rooms we’ve built. The design balances Swahili coastal tradition with modern finishes in a way that doesn’t feel forced or themed. It’s elegant without trying too hard.

The Villa with Private Pool is the choice for guests who want their own water, their own space, the option to swim at midnight without wandering anywhere. The garden setting gives it a sense of complete enclosure — it’s a world unto itself.

All three come with king beds, complimentary breakfast, free Wi-Fi, and direct access to the shared pool and beach. View the full villa details and availability here.

Honeymoons, Proposals, and Celebrating Something That Matters

A significant portion of our guests come to Zanzibar for a reason. An anniversary. A honeymoon. A proposal that has been planned for months. A milestone birthday that deserves to be marked properly.

We take this seriously in a way that goes beyond putting rose petals on a bed.

Our packages and special occasions experiences are built around the understanding that the details are what people actually remember. A floating breakfast in the private pool. A beach dinner table set up after dark with lanterns and the sound of the ocean. A proposal setup at a spot on the beach where the light at golden hour is genuinely extraordinary.

These don’t happen automatically — they happen because someone at Safaya spent time thinking about what would actually feel special rather than what would photograph well for a brochure.

One of our guests from Luxembourg (Louis, who you may have seen in our reviews) described it simply: “Perfect honeymoon. Peaceful villa, kind and attentive staff.” That’s not a result of following a checklist. It’s the result of the team caring about whether people leave happy.

The Restaurant: Not an Afterthought

Many private villa properties treat their restaurant as secondary. The view is the product; the food is fuel. We’ve deliberately done the opposite.

The restaurant at Safaya works with local ingredients — spices from Stone Town, fish from the waters immediately around the island, coconut and tropical fruit that don’t travel far to reach the kitchen. Zanzibar has a remarkable culinary heritage, a product of its centuries as a trading hub connecting East Africa, the Arab world, India, and Persia. The food here isn’t just good. It has a distinct character that you can’t replicate elsewhere.

Guests consistently mention the meals as a highlight of their stay, which is both gratifying and, we think, exactly right. A great day in Zanzibar — a morning snorkel, an afternoon on the beach, an evening watching the sun set from the terrace — deserves an excellent dinner at the end of it.

Breakfast is included with every villa stay and is served fresh each morning. If you’ve ever had tropical fruit straight off the island, you’ll understand why this matters.

Getting Out: Tours Worth Your Time

The villa is the sanctuary. But Zanzibar has things outside it that genuinely deserve a day or two of your time.

Our tours and excursions are guided experiences, not rushed group packages. A few worth knowing about:

Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most historically layered places in East Africa. The old Persian houses, the narrow lanes, the former slave market — it rewards time spent wandering with someone who knows its stories. Half a day here changes how you think about the island’s history.

Mnemba Atoll snorkelling and diving remains the highlight for anyone with even a passing interest in the ocean. The reef system is healthy, the visibility is exceptional on most days, and the diversity of marine life is remarkable. We organise private boat access — no shared speedboats, no waiting around.

Spice tours sound tourist-facing until you actually do one. Zanzibar was for centuries the world’s primary source of cloves, and the agricultural history of the island is genuinely fascinating. The sensory experience of a spice farm — touching and smelling things you’ve only known as dried powder — is unexpectedly memorable.

Sunset cruises from Nungwi are, honestly, one of the best things we offer. The private boat experiences include options for a romantic sunset dinner on the water, which is as good as it sounds.

Small Details That Guests Notice

After years of hosting, here are the things guests mention that we didn’t necessarily expect:

The quiet. Nungwi’s beach in front of Safaya doesn’t have beach vendors constantly approaching. The space feels genuinely peaceful.

The staff. Multiple guests have specifically named team members in their reviews. That doesn’t happen at large resorts. It happens when people are looked after by individuals who remember their names and their preferences.

The cleanliness. It’s mentioned in nearly every review, which is both a compliment and a standard we hold ourselves to rigorously.

The sense of not being rushed. Check-out is not a military operation here. If your flight is in the evening, there’s space to spend a last morning on the beach.

Practical Things Worth Knowing Before You Book

Best time to visit: The long dry season runs from June through October — this is peak season and the most consistently sunny period. The short dry season from December to February is also excellent. We’re open year-round, but if you’re flexible, those windows give you the most reliable beach weather.

Getting here: Zanzibar International Airport receives direct flights from Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, and several European cities during high season. From the airport to Nungwi is roughly 90 minutes by road. We can arrange transfers if you need them — just ask when booking.

Currency and payments: Tanzania uses the Tanzanian Shilling, but US dollars are widely accepted. Most major cards work fine at the villa.

What to pack: Light cotton clothing, a good reef-safe sunscreen, and one layer for evenings — it can be surprisingly cool after dark on the water.

A Final Word

There are hundreds of places to stay in Zanzibar. The island has developed quickly over the past decade and the range of accommodation is broader than it’s ever been.

What we offer at Safaya is specific: genuine privacy, a beach and setting that doesn’t require a flight of imagination to appreciate, food that reflects the character of the island, and a team that treats every guest as though their holiday is the only one being managed.

That’s not a marketing line. It’s what we hear back from guests who’ve stayed with us and, often, who’ve come back.

If you’re planning a Zanzibar holiday and you want to understand whether Safaya is the right fit, browse our villas, look at our extras and experiences, or just reach out. We’re happy to answer questions directly.
