If you ask anyone who has spent real time on Zanzibar’s north coast to name their favourite stretch of sand, Kendwa Beach comes up again and again — and for good reason. We run Safaya Luxury Villas just up the coast in Nungwi, so Kendwa is practically our backyard. Our team walks that beach regularly with guests planning their day trips, sunset dinners, and boat excursions, and this guide is built from that hands-on, on-the-ground knowledge rather than a quick internet search.
Whether you’re staying in Nungwi, Kendwa itself, or elsewhere on the island and thinking about a day visit, here’s what you actually need to know.
Zanzibar’s east and south coasts are stunning in photos, but they come with a catch most first-time visitors don’t discover until they arrive: the tide. On those beaches, the ocean can retreat hundreds of metres — sometimes over a kilometre — at low tide, leaving behind exposed reef flats instead of swimmable water for several hours a day.
Kendwa doesn’t have that problem. Along with neighbouring Nungwi, it sits on a deep-water shelf that keeps the ocean swimmable close to shore no matter what time you arrive. This single geographical detail is the main reason Kendwa consistently ranks among the most recommended beaches on the island, and it’s the first thing we tell guests when they’re deciding how to structure their days here.
The beach itself is wide, the sand is soft and pale, and because Kendwa faces west, it delivers some of the best sunsets anywhere on Zanzibar — a detail that matters more than people expect once they’ve watched one.
Kendwa is on the northwestern tip of Unguja, roughly 3 km down the coast from Nungwi. You can drive between the two in a matter of minutes, and at low tide it’s even possible to walk along the sand from one to the other. From Stone Town, it’s about a 56 km drive — around 90 minutes — through the island’s interior, passing spice farms and small villages along the way, which makes it easy to combine a Kendwa day trip with other things on your itinerary.
Because we’re based in Nungwi at Safaya Luxury Villas, guests staying with us can reach Kendwa in a short taxi ride or an easy beach walk, which is one of the reasons this stretch of coast works so well as a base for exploring both beaches without constantly repacking your bags.
This is Kendwa’s headline feature. You don’t need to check a tide chart before heading down to the water — swim in the morning, at midday, or right up until sunset.
Kendwa is one of the few west-facing beaches on Zanzibar, and the beachfront bars along the sand have essentially built their reputation around this daily show. Arrive with time to spare and a drink in hand.
The calm, clear water is well suited to snorkelling close to shore, and several dive operators run trips out toward Mnemba Atoll from this stretch of coast, where visibility regularly stretches tens of metres.
Kendwa has long been known for its full-moon beach parties, which draw a mixed crowd of travellers and locals. If a lively night out is part of your plans, it’s worth timing your visit around the lunar calendar.
Not every activity needs a booking. A long walk along the sand toward Nungwi, an afternoon under a beach umbrella, or just sitting with a coconut and watching the fishing boats go by is, honestly, most of the appeal.
A few practical notes from experience:
Most travellers base themselves either directly in Kendwa or a few minutes away in Nungwi, and there are good reasons to consider the latter. Nungwi has a slightly wider spread of restaurants, tour operators, and transport links, while still putting Kendwa’s beach and sunset within easy reach.
At Safaya Luxury Villas, we built an adults-only, beachfront property in Nungwi specifically around privacy and quiet — private pools, secluded villas, and personalised service, without the crowds you’ll find on the busiest stretches of sand nearby. You can browse our villas here, or read more about who we are and how we work.
For couples planning a Kendwa sunset dinner, a Mnemba snorkelling trip, or a private boat excursion along this coast, our experiences and add-ons and private boat trips are built around exactly this stretch of the island, so it’s easy to fold a Kendwa day into your stay without doing the planning yourself. We also put together curated tours and trips for guests who want the island’s highlights — Mnemba Island, spice farms, Stone Town — without the logistics.
If you’re staying multiple nights, our packages for special occasions often include the kind of romantic beach dinners and photography sessions that pair perfectly with a Kendwa sunset.
Kendwa has its own string of beach bars and casual seafood spots worth exploring on the day itself. If you’re staying with us in Nungwi, our team also runs The Zanzibar Restaurant, where the menu leans on fresh local seafood and Zanzibari flavours — a good way to end a long beach day without needing to go far.
Is Kendwa Beach good for swimming at all tide levels? Yes. Along with Nungwi, it’s one of only two beaches on Zanzibar where you can swim comfortably regardless of the tide, thanks to the deep-water shelf just offshore.
How far is Kendwa from Nungwi? About 3 km by road, and walkable along the sand at low tide.
Is Kendwa quieter than Nungwi? Generally, yes. Kendwa tends to feel a little more relaxed and resort-focused, while Nungwi has more bars, shops, and backpacker energy — though both share a lively full-moon party scene.
What’s the best time of day to visit? Late afternoon into sunset is hard to beat, but if you want the beach to yourself, go early in the morning on a weekday.

Kendwa Beach is one of those places that photos genuinely undersell — the water really is that clear, and the sunsets really are that good. If you’re building a Zanzibar itinerary around it, basing yourself nearby in Nungwi gives you the best of both: quick access to Kendwa’s beach and sunsets, plus everything else the north coast has to offer.
