Most couples picture the same scene before a trip to Zanzibar: a table on the sand, candles, the sea a few steps away. Plenty of places sell some version of it. What differs is how it feels when you sit down.
A good beach dinner is quiet. There’s no crowd and no one shouting over a speaker. It’s just the two of you, the sound of the water, and a meal that doesn’t rush. That’s what we aim for at Safaya, and this post covers what to expect and when to book. It also shares a few small things that make the evening better.
A restaurant is great for a regular night out. But if you’re celebrating something, like a honeymoon, an anniversary, or just finally getting a week off together, a regular table can feel too ordinary.
On the beach, nobody is waiting for your table. Nobody hovers. You can stay as long as the conversation lasts, and you’ll probably lose track of time. Our guests say this more than anything else: they didn’t expect to stay for hours.
Our Romantic Beach Dinner is a private, candlelit setup on the sand, just for the two of you, facing the Indian Ocean. It costs $200 per couple.
Some practical points:
If you’re curious about the food, our restaurant page gives a good sense of what the kitchen does. It’s also worth telling us about any allergies or favourites ahead of time, so the evening feels planned for you rather than copied from a template.
One thing to know: we don’t sell alcohol at the villas. You’re welcome to buy a bottle of wine or champagne from outside and bring it with you. If you want a drink with dinner, pick one up on the way in from the airport.
The sun sets near the equator at a fairly steady time through the year, so you won’t have trouble timing it. A few thoughts on choosing the night:
Don’t book it for your first evening. You’ll be tired from the flight, and the evening deserves you at your best. Day two or three is better.
Think about the weather. Zanzibar’s dry months, roughly June to October and December to February, give you the most dependable clear evenings. Rain can still happen, and if it does, we’ll talk with you about moving the date rather than squeezing it in.
Pick a night that matters. If you’re there for an anniversary or a birthday, plan around it. If you’re proposing, there’s a separate Proposal Decoration ($200) that can be arranged on the same evening.
The dinner is lovely on its own, but it’s even better when the day leads up to it. A few ideas that pair well:
If you’d like something even bigger, the Romantic Sunset Dinner ($400) takes the whole thing onto a private boat. You sail at golden hour and then eat on board. It’s a different feel from the beach dinner, so it’s worth thinking about which you prefer. Some couples do one on each end of their trip.
Yes, and this is the part most people miss. If you book direct, the dinner can come as part of your stay:
You’ll find the full details on our packages page. Booking direct also saves you at least 10% compared with booking sites.
Safaya is an adults-only property in Nungwi, on the north end of the island. Every villa has its own pool, and you’re a short walk from the beach, so you can go from your terrace to your dinner table in minutes. If you’re still deciding where to stay, take a look at our luxury villas in Zanzibar. The Sea View Villa gives you the ocean from your terrace, and the Garden View Villa is a quieter, greener option.
Many of our guests are celebrating something. If that’s you, you’re not alone. A lot of couples searching for honeymoon destinations in Zanzibar end up with us because they want privacy more than a big resort scene. One recent guest summed it up as a “perfect honeymoon,” and we’re proud of that.
If you want to see more of the island between dinners, our Zanzibar luxury tours cover the highlights without the group-bus feel.
A romantic beach dinner isn’t something you need to overthink. Pick a night, tell us a bit about the two of you, and we’ll handle the rest.
You can book direct or call us on +255 777 135 101 to ask about dates and packages. We’re happy to help you choose the right evening.
