Zanzibar looks good from the ground. From 100 metres up, it looks unreal.
The water changes colour in bands, from pale turquoise at the shore to deep blue where the reef drops away. Sandbars appear and disappear with the tide. A villa with a private pool turns into a bright blue rectangle surrounded by green. None of that comes across in a normal phone photo, which is why drone photography has become one of the most requested extras among our guests at Safaya.
Here’s what we’ve learned from watching hundreds of couples do it, and how to get shots you’ll still want to look at in ten years.
Most destinations are pretty in one direction. Zanzibar is pretty in all of them, but the island’s real character comes from its shape: long white beaches, a coral-fringed coastline, and water that shifts colour with depth and light.
Seen from above, you can finally see how a place fits together. Your villa, the beach in front of it, the reef beyond, the dhows drifting by. For a honeymoon or anniversary, that single wide shot often becomes the photo people frame.
Light matters more than gear. A cheap drone at the right hour beats an expensive one at noon.
Early morning (6:00 to 8:00 AM). The sea is calm, the beach is empty, and the colours are soft. This is the best window for clean, quiet shots with no footprints and no crowds.
Golden hour before sunset. On the northern tip of the island, the sun goes down over open water, so you get long warm light across the whole coastline. If you only have time for one flight, make it this one.
Midday. The sun is almost overhead, which makes the water glow an almost fluorescent turquoise. It’s harsh on skin and shadows, but it’s the best time for shots that are purely about the colour of the sea. Just keep people out of the frame.
A few ideas that work every time:
If you want the most dramatic aerial footage, get out on the water. A boat gives you something a beach never can: a moving subject on an open, empty sea.
Our guests often pair a photo session with one of our Zanzibar boat trips, especially the private trip to Mnemba Island. The reef shows up beautifully from above, and snorkelling stops give you natural pauses for photos. A private sunset cruise is also ideal for drone shots, since the golden light and the boat’s wake together make a very clean composition.
Before you fly anything in Tanzania, check the current drone regulations. Permits are required for drone use, and the rules can change, so it’s worth confirming before you pack one. If you’d rather not deal with the paperwork, booking a professional is the simpler route.
A few common-sense habits apply everywhere:
Flying a drone well takes practice, and a holiday isn’t the time to learn. At Safaya, we offer a Camera & Drone Photography add-on for $150, which covers both ground and aerial photography. It’s the simplest way to get footage of your stay without carrying equipment or worrying about permits. You can see it alongside our other experiences and add-ons, and if you book for 10 nights or more, a professional photography session is already included as part of our direct-booking packages.
Honestly, the location you stay in decides how good your aerial photos can be. A villa that opens directly onto the sand, with open space around it, gives you far more to work with than a crowded resort strip.
If you’re still working out where to stay in Zanzibar, the north coast around Nungwi is a strong choice for photographers. The beaches are wide, the water stays bright, and the sunsets are clear. It’s also home to what many people consider the best beach in Zanzibar, thanks to the soft white sand and the way the sea stays swimmable even at low tide.
Our luxury villas in Zanzibar sit right on that stretch. Every villa has a private pool, and the beachfront gives you open sky in every direction, which is exactly what a drone needs. Whether you pick the Sea View or Garden View villa, you can step outside and be filming within minutes.
If aerial photography is just one part of what you want from the island, take a look at our curated Zanzibar luxury trips. They’re built around the things couples ask for most: the water, the history of Stone Town, and the quieter corners of the island that most visitors miss.
The best drone photos aren’t the most technical ones. They’re the ones that make you remember exactly how a moment felt: the warm sand, the quiet, the person next to you. Zanzibar gives you endless backdrops for that, and with a little planning, you’ll leave with pictures that do the place justice.
